Kelly and Wade – Winnataska

What the heck is a “Winnataska”?    Winnataska is a youth camp established near Moody Alabama in 1916.  As a joint effort between the Boy Scouts and the Interdenominational Birmingham Sundays School Association, the camp has been in continuous operation for nearly 100 years!!

In her foreword to the book “Winnataska Remembered”, written by Katherine Price Garmon and Virginia Pounds Brown, Leah Rawls Atkins wrote “Winnataska represented the firsts in the lives of many children—–the first time to ride a pony, the first time to swim or paddle a canoe, the first time to be away from home…..Winnataska was more than a pleasant break in the long hot summer. More than hiking and camping and being close to nature and God. More than learning to follow rules and to get along with others…..For thousands of young people who were fortunate enough to have passed through those rock gateposts, Winnataska days eased the pain of growing up and encouraged us to adopt worthwhile commitments and lifetime goals.”

Okay.  Now we’ve got that covered.  What the heck is a “Kelly and Wade”?    Kelly and Wade met at Camp Winnataska several years ago.   They both attended the camp as children but their paths never crossed until they became councilors  there.   Like many other Winnataska couples before them,  they fell in love.   I photographed their wedding this weekend.  Guess where it was.   Winnataska!!!

William Bay - Mark,
Really like the 2nd and 3rd in this series. The second is such a great location. Of course knowing me, I’d crop that into a long pano, but the trees add a “the world is a larger place than us” perspective and like that too.
The 3rd has great timing and lighting. Really well done.

Razvan - I like it when the couple chooses a meaningful location for the engagement session.

I like the lighting in the third picture.
