Tomcats

June 1, 2008 | Filed Under Events | Comments Off

This is TOTALLY not wedding or photography related. I just thought I share a little of myself with you guys. In my free time I enjoy singing competitively in a Barbershop Quartet called the Tomcats. Here is a recording where we placed 9th in a regional competition recently. Cheesy, I know. But it’s another one of my creative outlets. My cohorts are Ed Whorton singing bass, Mitchell McDow singing baratone, Tom Brown sings lead, and yours truly on Tenor.

You can hear us sing Ain't Misbehavin

Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Association

May 17, 2008 | Filed Under Events | Comments Off

Carol and I are honored to announce our acceptance into the Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Association. The focus of the [AG]WPJA is on the artistic and “fine art” aspects of wedding photojournalism.

For many years, the standards of the primary division of the WPJA required that all images be captured naturally, and that the images undergo minimal post processing and editing. Many photographers felt that their creativity was in some ways limited. Now the Artistic Guild embraces and encourages international wedding photojournalists who are not only excellent wedding photojournalists but are also experts in the art of post processing and digital artistic enhancement of their images.

Loren and Sam - Opportunity Backfired!

April 30, 2008 | Filed Under Events | Comments Off

There are tons of great places to photograph in the downtown area, but as photographers we sometimes are guilty of using the same places over and over. I wanted something a little different for Loren and Sam. I arrived downtown about an hour early so I could scout for new locations.

I noticed that people were milling around at St. Pauls Cathedral was excited at the prospect of taking a few photographs in the garden. The gate had always previously been locked, today was my lucky day. Little did I know . . .

As soon as Loren and Sam arrived we rushed to the church so we could get their before they closed. We spent about 15 minutes taking photos in and around the gardens. Satisfied, we headed toward the car to go to our next location.

We discovered that the custodian of the church locks the gates at 4:00. We also discovered that being inside was not a good place to be after the gates are locked. To make a long story short, we had to resort to scaling an 8ft wall to exit the grounds.

Not a great first impression - Sorry guys!! But you have to admit the photos are wonderful!

Thankfully - The rest of our day was much less exciting.

We had a great time visiting Linn Park, Museum of Art, and several other wonderful Birmingham Landmarks.

Loren and Sam are a lovely couple and I am really looking forward to photographing their wedding in a few weeks.

Be sure and check out their slideshow to see the rest of the photos!

Congratulations Julie and Jonathan!!

Jonathan, your not supposed to be reading my blog. Julie doesn’t want you to see the dress before the wedding. So if your reading this, you’re busted!!

There. With the disclaimer out of the way, here’s the photos. Julie chose Cobb Lane Bed and Breakfast for the location of her Bridal Portraits. I’m not sure which is more beautiful, the venue or the bride!!

Sometimes you have a photosession where everything just goes RIGHT! Beautiful day, beautiful bride, beautiful dress, beautiful location, beautiful smile . . . My job doesn’t get any easier than this. Rachel chose the Birmingham Botanical Gardens as the site for her bridal portraits. Rachel’s Mom is a photo enthusist and tagged along as my assistant. I was thrilled that she was able to get some wonderful shots of her daughter with her own camera. Thanks Mom ! Couldn’t have done it without you !

Shearon and Zollie at Sloss Furnace

March 27, 2008 | Filed Under Events, engagements | Leave a Comment

On April 18, 1882, Sloss Furnaces began producing iron and did not stop until ninety years later. Fast forward 127 years and you can tell that Sloss is still creating some heat!! Shearon and Zollie had been dating for some time when Zollie popped the question. They were at Sloss Furnace. They seem to be made for each other. I’m proud to be a part of a little more history that was made at the Furnace. Carol and I are looking forward to the wedding on April 5th.
